About Me

My name is Alyssa. I am thirteen years old and I am from Kalbarri. I am 5’2”. My favourite animals are cows and my favourite colour is pink.

I have an older sister and a younger brother. Their names are Macey and Tom. My mums name is Roberta and my dads name is Russell. I have a pet dog called Gracie, she is a black greyhound.

I used to do gymnastics for a while but I quit at the start of this year, now I just do dance. My favourite style of dance is contemporary. This year in July I went to dance competitions with some other people. I didn’t do really badly but I could have done better.

In Kalbarri there are around 1400 people that live here. Kalbarri is located right on the coast of Western Australia. Since we live right next to the beach lots of people enjoy going there. One of the main tourist attractions here is Natures Window. It is a rock with a hole in it in the inland gorges.

There are around 200 people in the school in Kalbarri and 20 kids in my class. I am in year 8. My favourite subject is art. Kalbarri District High School is the only school in Kalbarri.

My best friend’s name is Gisele and her favourite sport is Basketball. Together we like to walk around town doing nothing.

Refugee Survival

Dear diary,

I am safe, I made it to land. Although I got to this place a year ago, I haven’t even thought about writing about my journey here.

I arrived to this refugee camp on a stormy day. I was greeted by an angry guard who couldn’t seem to stop yelling at everyone. He showed me to my room, which is actually more like a jail cell. The only two things that I have here is a hard, uncomfortable bed and a rusty, old toilet. I take showers in this big room with other refugees. I also eat dinner in a cafeteria-like room with everyone else. I knew that this place was going to suck.

I don’t know what has happened to any of my family and friends. I’m not sure if they’re safe, or even alive. I don’t think they know if I’m safe or not either.

Everyone has told me that it’s not safe to go home right now, but I desperately want to. Here they feed me so poorly. I feel as weak as a new born kitten. People are telling me that I should be grateful for where I am right now, but I’m not. I feel as though I am breathing, but I’m not alive. I do nothing all day. My existence is pointless. I am a statue; I am stuck in this place.

I miss everything from home. I miss my family and friends. I miss the amazing food that I used to eat. I miss the weather and the land. I miss absolutely everything.

I don’t feel safe here. I have nightmares every night about when I had to leave home. I have also heard about other nearby refugees getting kicked out of their camps. I’m scared that that’s going to happen to me.

I hope I get out of this place soon and get to live freely. I can’t stand another day here.

My Friend

Just like Adeline and Aunt Baba, I have a close relationship with my friend Gisele. We have been best friends since year 4. We became friends by sitting next to each other in class, but before that I didn’t like her. We can tell each other anything. We are always on the same Mario Kart team and we use team work to flog the other team. We have really funny jokes that we made up together and they make us cry. We are inseparable. The longest we have gone without talking to each other was around 30 minutes, but then we couldn’t handle not talking. We have the best handshake and secret codes. Gisele is my best friend and I don’t know what I’d do without her.

Living in Kalbarri

Do you feel you belong in Kalbarri? Yes.

Do you feel you belong anywhere else as well? Yes, I feel like I belong in a big city with lots of stuff going on or somewhere like a forest in Canada.

Where do your parents feel that they belong? My dad belongs somewhere where he can fish and surf and I don’t know about my mum.

Where did your grandparents/great-grandparents belong? I don’t know.

How long does a person have to live in a place before he or she feels that they belong there? I think it’s different for everyone. If you enjoy the place you live in you will probably feel that you belong there much quicker than if don’t enjoy it.

To belong to a place, do you need to feel you own a piece of property there? No

To belong to a country do you need to be born there? How can Australians get a sense of belonging to a country, if they live in the city? I think you don’t need to be born in a country to feel you belong there. Australians can get a sense of belonging to a country by going out into the natural enviroment.

My Chinese Horoscope

Since I was born in 2003, my horoscope is a goat. If you were born in either 2015, 2003, 1991, 1979 or 1969 you’re also a goat. Goats are one of the most creative and artistic of all the animals, which I am. Goats are loved by friends and family, and are trusted to be available when trouble arrives, I definitely can’t be trusted when trouble arrives. Goats enjoy relaxed and casual enviroments, and prefer smaller groups of people to interact with rather than big social gatherings. I would rather crazy enviroments with tons of different stuff going on. In the Fire Monkey Year Goats should spend time caring for themselves, which you should already be doing. This Chinese New Year the goat may be bewildered by the activities going on, but shouldn’t even try to think about what’s happening, which I never do anyway, because you won’t have the time to.

The Time Everyone Forgot Me

In 2013 my Mum, Nanna, 3 of my cousins and my siblings went to Bali. One night we were walking down the street and we went into a chemist. Everyone was talking and had already left, forgetting me who was playing with some fish in a tank. I soon realised that I had been left alone and started crying. I ran out of the chemist crying and looked outside. I couldn’t see anyone I knew so I started walking up the street. I finally found my family and they hadn’t even noticed I was gone until I told them. It was really sad.

My Achievement

From 2012-2015 in September I went to Perth to compete for Gymnastics. It was always so exciting and fun. To make it to these competitions you have to get in the top eight scores in the state for your age group.I competed for floor, beam, bars, vault and overall. At the end of the round we had presentations. Everyone in Kalbarri always DID really well and always placed on something. The whole gym always had fun competing and watching everyone else. We even made friends from other gymnastics clubs.
