zest fest 2016 by Liam

The 2016 zest festival will be the last one since starting in 2012 .

This year the zest festival marks the 400th anniversary of the landing of Dutch Captain Dirk Hartog in WA. On 25th October 1616 Dirk and his crew reached Cape Inscription in the Shark Bay area.

The theme this year is Eendracht (the name of Dirk Hartogs ship) which means unity and will celebrate young sailors, explorers and women of the era who waited for their loved ones.

The zest festival is a great time to get together with family and spend the weekend learning  about are history, watching performances and eating food.

Perth trip

On the weekend I went to Perth for a week for my sister’s doctor’s appointment .

It was freezing cold when I was down there and I had to go and buy new winter clothing.  I also had some birthday money which I had no problem spending at the shops there.

I didn’t eat very healthy while we were there, we ate lots of take-away except for a couple of nights when mum made home cooked meals which Amy and Cam were very happy about.

On Monday all the family got together for a barbecue lunch, it was very noisy but good fun to catch up with my cousins. Amy, Cam and I played a card game called Cards Against Humanity. We laughed so much and I ended up winning the game. Its 17 plus rating .

Overall I had a lot of fun and  by the time I got h0me I was very tired and went to bed early.

This is one of my favourite recipes I make it nearly every week.

  • 1/3 cup golden syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Method

  • STEP 1Preheat oven to 170C (150C fan forced). Line a slice pan with baking paper, with sides extending over long sides.
  • STEP 2Combine flour, oats and coconut in a large bowl, make a well in the centre.
  • STEP 3Combine butter, golden syrup and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Stir over a medium heat until butter melts and mixture is smooth.
  • STEP 4Add the bicarbonate of soda and stir to combine.
  • STEP 5Pour wet mixture over dry ingredients and stir until evenly combined.
  • STEP 6Spread into prepared pan and smooth with the back of a spoon.
  • STEP 7Bake for 20 minutes. Cool in pan.
  • STEP 8Lift out using the paper and cut into 20 bars. Keep in an air tight container.

Caversham Wild life Park

During the shcool holidays  me and my sister went to caversham wild life park in Perth.  We where given a map of the park which showed where all of the native wildlife are .

There is an open kangaroo pen where you can go in and feed them and take photos with them. There is an Australian homestead arena where you can hold animals and learn about them . My sister got to hold a snake and had her photo with it . there is also a farm show where we watched sheep shearing and sheep dogs mustering  sheep.

There is an enclosure with farm animals and there was a goat that followed me around and grabbed my map and ate it.

My favourite animal at the park was the Rufus Bettong, it looks like a small mouse with kangaroo legs. It feeds on roots, herbs, grasses and small insects but fungi is its main diet. It only lives for 4 to 6 years .  It is a small marsupial (rat kangaroo).

There is a shop where you can buy lunch and a gift shop on the way out of the park.

It took us nearly all day to get around the park and I was exhausted by the end of the day but it was a great day.

I am hoping next school holidays that I can work as a volunteer at the park and maybe that will lead into a job for me  in the future.

My Dog Clyde

We bought Clyde in Northampton from a breeder  in 2012 . He is an American staffy and his colour is tan and white.  He was one of six puppies and his sister named Bonnie lives in Perth with my Uncle Brett  so they get to play together when we visit each other.  He was the cutest little puppy but grew to be a very big dog.

He loves water and we take him swimming at the beach whenever we can and we have a dog pool for him at home. He would swim all day if he could.

I have taught Clyde to shake, hi-five and roll over , he would do anything for his favourite snack – Smackos.  He likes to watch animals on tv and loves a game of tug of war with rope.  He likes to think he is a tough guard dog but really he is a big softie.

When I take him for a walk to the whale lookout he loves to sit on the chairs there and look out over the town.  He always wants to go for a ride in the car and is at the gate waiting to go for a ride as soon as mum or dad pick up the car keys. When we can’t take him for a ride he acts really sad and sulks.

Overall Clyde is a great dog, full of personality and is my best friend.
