Term 2 Homework – Year 8

YEAR 8

 TERM 2 – ENGLISH HOMEWORK

You have two types of homework this term.  The first is to read the novel, Lockie Leonard, Human Torpedo.  You will complete a Reading Log and answer questions about your reading.  You will also be able to read the book in library each Thursday.  This will contribute towards your mark in the Reading strand of English.

You also required to keep a journal and your marks will go towards the Writing strand of English.  Your journal can be in the form of a written journal or a student blog – your choice.  (If you choose to have a blog, I need to help you set it up and you need to think of a theme.)   Your written journal can be as plain or fancy as you like. You can decorate it; put photos on, draw or whatever you like – as long as it is appropriate.  You can use an exercise book (you should have an unused library exercise book) or you may prefer to use a scrapbook or other notebook you already have at home.

Inside your journal you can put a variety of things, such as –

Your thoughts and feelings

  • Poetry – yours and others
  • Photos
  • Newspaper/ magazine clippings
  • Reviews or comments on books, short stories, poems, television programs, songs and so on
  • Write stories or songs
  • Write about your weekends
  • Biographies of your favourite singers, sports stars etc
  • Quotes from movies or magazines that appeal to you
  • Write about your hobbies or favourite sports
  • And more…….

Although this is your journal, this is also homework and will be checked by me every Thursday. Remember that your teacher, the school principal, your parent/guardian or even a member of the Education Department can ask to look at your journal at any time. Please keep it appropriate!

As well as your own contributions to this journal, please choose at least FIVE of the following prompts to respond to during Term 2.  Each response should be at least half a page.  Make sure you use your best spelling and grammar and include capital letters and full stops where required.

Due Date: last week of term 2

Choose at least five of these prompts to respond to over the term –

1.      What would happen if everyone lived in space?   What type of houses would they live in?  What type of clothing would they wear?  What would they eat?  How would they travel?
2.      What do you like about yourself? What don’t you like so much?
3.      What do you think makes a good friend?
4.      What do you think about the amount of violence on tv and computer games?
5.      What things are better than going to school?
6.      How would you change the world to make it a better place?
7.      Explain how to play your favourite game?
8.      Write out your favourite recipe. You can add a photo if you want.
9.      When was the last time you cried and why?
10.  Who or what has had a strong influence on your life?

If you have private thoughts or feelings you want to write down in your journal but do not wish anyone to see, please either put it in an envelope or cover it in some way with the word “Private” marked on it and I will not look at it. Do not put private thoughts on a blog unless you want everyone to see them.

As well as your own contributions to this journal, please choose at least FIVE of the following prompts to respond to during Term 2.  Each response should be at least half a page.  Make sure you use your best spelling and grammar and include capital letters and full stops where required.

Please note this is a homework task and you can work on it at home at your own pace. Occasionally you may have an opportunity to work on it in class if you finish work early. The more effort you put into this journal, the more marks you will earn.

A Word About Reading

Reading as a teenager leads to success in school and in life. It expands vocabulary, writing skills, general knowledge, comprehension skills and often helps students understand complex ideas.  Teenagers are able to escape their own life and problems for a while and reading can often give them the skills to solve their own problems as well as opening up a world outside of their own while they learn about other countries and people from different cultures.  And, for many teenagers when they find authors they enjoy, reading is fun.

I encourage all students to read at home as much as possible – whether it be the newspaper, an online blog like this one, a novel, a biography or another non-fiction book about something that interests them.  Some students don’t know what to read because they don’t know what is out there and so don’t know what they like.

Term 1: Year 8 Spelling List

The following is a list of words students must learn for the week’s spelling test and class competition. Included is the “Word Attack” task they must complete which will help them learn how to spell the words.  Students will be tested on spelling and meanings of the words and the Word Attack tasks will be collected for marking.

All students have a copy of this sheet.  If they lose it they will need to ask me for another or work from this page.
