About Me

Ummm, hi. My name is Jordan I live in Kalbarri which is located six hours north of Perth along the coast of WA. I am 14 years of age and enjoy things such as surfing, footy, swimming and a little bit of diving. I live with a family of four. I only have one brother who is younger than me and a complete rat. I also live with my mummy and daddy. I also like to listen to music and currently excited to get my hands on the Green Day Album. It’s going to be so good. Other bands that I enjoy a lot are My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, Neon Trees and many more.

In my spare time I either listen to music or go for a surf. There are plenty of places to surf in Kalbarri. For when the swell is smaller and as long as there is no swell beaches such as Blue Holes, Dang Dangs or Echoes are all really good spots. The surf spot that Kalbarri is most famous for is Jacques Beach. Jacques beach is about a five minute drive south of town and actually holds three really good surf breaks. These include breaks are known as The Point, Lopes and The Bay. All of these breaks kinda connect together so that when you get a really good and a really big wave. You can ride it all the way from the start of the point, through Lopes and into the bay.

But if there is no swell. Then there is a problem. I used to free dive when it was good but I can’t really do it anymore mainly due to the fact that I don’t have a spear gun any more. That’s because dad accidentally snapped it while loading it. Plus I couldn’t ever equalise due to my sinuses being blocked. To equalise is to like make the pressure in your ear drum equal to the pressure of the water that is applying it. Or something like that. I’ll still occasionally go for a snorkel or something but if its dead flat then I’d just grab a couple of mates and go rock jumping down at pot alley.

I attend school at Kalbarri District High School because it is the only school in Kalbarri and the nearest school is about another 100km’s away. Kalbarri is only a small town with about 2000 people living it, I think, not really sure. Kalbarri is mainly located alongside a river known as Murchison River. But there are still many beaches located nearby as mentioned before. When you follow the river further in land you come across the national park and in it are locations like the gorges, natures window the z bend and many more. I really haven’t gone to any of these locations for a long time so I can’t really remember what the locations are like but I hear that they are really nice.

There is not really a general sport that the majority of the town revolves around. A fair few people are from NSW and Queensland so they more enjoy rugby but there isn’t a team for it. Some people play footy some play golf, some play a bit of cricket. A large amount of women in the community play netball though. You don’t see too many footy games in Kalbarri, there is only like one or two games that get held here a year. But everyone is generally pretty enthusiastic about them and you get some pretty good crowds on those days.

But for the majority of the time you’ll have to go to Northampton or further get any consistent games being played. Most kids that play footy play for the Northampton rams and play against other clubs from Geraldton, Dongara, and many more. I usually play for Northampton as well but this year I didn’t as there weren’t enough players for a team. But my brother does play for them now.

And that’s pretty much me.

Zest Fest by Amelia Lawson

The zest fest has been going on for a few years now and it has brought joy to many. The community comes together and creates something amazing. Everyone has a fun time learning new things every single year the zest fest event is on.

Last year when I did dance we all had to learn a little dance sequence that was going to be played on the zest fest night. Ally, Alyssa, Haylee, Amy and I all volunteered to be the samurai and perform the dance on the night. The dance we learned grew bigger every practice we went to, resulting in us playing a bigger role in the play than we had expected. While we learnt the dance, the puppeteers were learning how to puppeteer. I learnt a lot of creative things while at the practices that I would never usually learn anywhere else. I got to hold and play with all the puppets and the other props they were using on the night. We all enjoyed the experience quite a lot.

This year I’m not so involved in it all but I have heard that it is going to be pretty impressive. The people here in Kalbarri are so very lucky to be involved in an event like this and it is sad that this year is the last year it will be held. Thank you Bec for bringing the community together in all of this.

Week 1 post

This is my grandma‘s birthday where my family and I went down to blue holes and watched the sunset while letting a balloon go. Then went home and had her favourite food pizza which was her last meal.

Today the 16th of August we celebrate your birthday. The day that was your day and your day only! All of this day everyone that knows you will be thinking about you today and spending a minute or two to say a few words for you! Like mum (Julie) and Kim are going whale watching at Red Bluff where we spread your ashes and said our goodbyes. You were my grandma, my Nanma, the person I told everything to and I miss our conversations about work and school and who we like and don’t like. I love how you would always make me a sandwich with tomato, cheese, salt and pepper that taste amazing!!! I also miss being able to walk over to your house and make you a cuppa with a biscuit. I miss everything about you and I still can’t believe that your gone but things happen for a reason and I still can’t figure out what this reason was but when I do I will tell you!! I love you Nanma 💘💗❣

Sorry Miss Flannery that my posts are so late but I’m starting to try and do all my post as soon as possible! Thank you!

ZEST FEST POEM

Across the ocean
and through the sea
we found our resting
place to soon be.

By the side of the cliffs
we kiss goodbye
to the lives we will now hide.

65km from Kalbarri’s north
where we veered off course,
when we hit the cliff
Our lives were gone.

When we heard the bang
we all knew it was time
for our lives to flash
before our eyes.

The Chamber of rhetoric performance by Nate South

Each year at the Zest Fest there is a dramatic performance which I go down with my family to watch. This year I noticed on the Zest Fest website that it was named “The Chamber Of Rhetoric Performance”. I didn’t know what it meant until I did some research and this is what I found: The chambers of rhetoric were also known as the Rederijkerskamers and were dramatic groups which lived in the coastal regions of western Europe. These were low-lying countries which were below sea level, such as: The Netherlands and Belgium. During the 15th and 16th centuries the members of Rhetoric (Rederijkers) were interested in Dramas and Lyrics.

The Chambers of Rhetoric were founded in Flanders in the 15th century. They started to perform in Holland, Then started to perform with poems. Most Dutch cities sponsored a chamber of rhetoric, most cities had more than one. The Franc Hals Museum was built as they won the lottery in which chambers of Rhetoric participated from all over the country. At the start of the 16th century, the Rederjiker had three societies, the “Violieren” the “Olyftack” and the “Goudbloem”.

I found this really interesting because every Zest fest the outdoor performance is called the Chamber of rhetoric, I thought it was just the title of the performance, each year but with a bit of research I found out some really interesting historical facts…And learnt some weird Dutch names.

The Temple Part 1

“3…2…”, we all were ready and about to jump, we were just waiting for the green light. “GREEN LIGHT, GO GO GO!”, we all ran one by one, out the back of the plane, falling above the dense Jungle. Mark pulled his chute too early and was floating down slowly, Kate pulled her chute after Mark. I wanted to get to the ground as soon as possible so we all could find it faster.

Frank was no where to be seen, but soon came speeding through the air like a torpedo yelling: “Help my parachute wont open!”, I was the only person that could help because I didn’t pull my chute yet, so I had to pretty much fall after him. We were getting very close to the ground and I wasn’t getting any closer to him. I pulled my chute……..it was by far the hardest things I have ever done.

I looked up because I didn’t want to see him hit the ground, for about a minute I kept looking up at the sky until I looked down to see trees two metres from my face. I freaked out but couldn’t do anything, I got through the tree barely with a few scratches but my parachute got snagged and I got yanked backwards and hit a branch THUD*, My head hit the branch and I got knocked out.

Music

Okay, first blog post of the term. What to blog about? How about music, everybody loves music, but what is it? What is music, what does it represent and why is it that we enjoy it so much?

I don’t really have an answer to that, but according to the dictionary, the definition of music is ‘an art of organising sound in significant forms to express ideas and emotion through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony and colour.’ So what does this mean in a more simple form? Well from my interpretation of it, music tends to tell a story. These stories can be very realistic and relatable  to the listener. It can also be over the top crazy and tell us these wild unimaginable tales with mythological creatures fighting aliens in medieval times. That’s probably a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the idea.

Songs can vary in length as well. Some might only last for a single minute and another might last for ten even fifteen minutes. These can depend on what the artist is trying to achieve, they might want a song short to, I guess pump you up for the next song. The song that is played afterwards could be fifteen minutes long. The longer songs are supposed to be, awe – inspiring, emotional and downright epic.

There’s also just so many genres of music to choose from. The ones that I can name from just off the top of my head include; pop, hip hop, rap, rock, classic rock, punk rock, jazz, classical, opera, RnB, soul, alternative and many, many more. There is a genre for just about everyone no matter what your into.

This is probably why music is so popular throughout the entire history of humanity. Because everyone has their own artist, their own little thing that they enjoy and can relate to. If someone enjoys that same bit of music, then you have someone to talk to and relate upon on something.

Music brings us all together as everyone enjoys and everyone has their favourite song that is the same as someone else.

My Weekend

This post isn’t really about my whole weekend, just the Saturday as It isn’t Sunday yet. But anyway, back to what I did on the Saturday.

So a couple of things happened on the day, it mainly took place at Wagoe Farm. We went there as it was my cousins 4th birthday so we went there to celebrate that and see their brand new puppy. The other reason why was that my Uncle was giving away an old Quadbike of his. He didn’t want it as he never used it and the only significant problem with it was a dodgy muffler.

Sonny also had a mate over and he came along with us. We first stopped by at my Uncle’s place, we saw the birthday boy, gave him his presents and saw the new puppy. I’m pretty sure the puppy was a pure kelpie but she had white paws so I’m not 100% on it. She’s a very bossy dog, constantly barking at the other dogs. Very active as well, especially seeing how it was only seven, eight weeks old. She did eventually crash though.

After the quick visit we continued to my nana and pop’s place and that’s where the quad bike was. It was a 400cc can-am, a very good bike and Sonny was fully frothing to go for a ride on it. The second we got out of the car, Sonny and his mate bolted straight over to the shed where the bikes were kept. He found it straight away and was off without a moments notice.

We had afternoon tea after that, tried some of the sausages that dad and my uncle had made while they were there last. They were really good, they were pork sausages with bit of spice and tasted quite nice after they were fried.

We put the new quad on the trailer, waited for mum to finally stop chatting and headed back home.

And that was my weekend.

AFL

This year has been a really good year for the Australian Football League, or AFL for short. There really hasn’t been a definite best team this year, sure Sydney Swans might be at the top of the ladder this round, but it’s almost finals and it’s not really much of a lead anyway, most teams in the top five could easily claim it next week if Sydney loses.

Most of the teams have been really solid this year, sure there’s still that one or even two teams that are just nowhere near as good as the other teams this season. You never really know who’s gonna win a game this season. For example, the Melbourne Demons lose most games they play. But as of late they have been on a bit of a winning streak and are fairly challenging for other teams to over come, they don’t lose without a fight.

As of recently however, the Demons have dropped back down to their usual level but it was exciting to see that sort of thing happen in a game of footy.

Most seasons had pretty decisive winners for most games before they even started. But now, it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen next, as shown in the previous example.

But another example of this is the Fremantle Dockers, Last year they were by far the greatest team in the first half of the season, they were the favourites to win the grand final, they were untouchable. But they peaked too early, started to lose their games and knocked out in the semi’s.

This year they did much, much worse. They lost the first ten games in a row, lost some of their best players. This included Nat Fyfe who stopped playing due to an injury and Pavolich just retired this year. Now any of their remaining decent players are branching out to join other clubs.

This was beautiful for me to watch as I’m an Eagles supporter and the Docker’s fans are absolutely horrendous. It’s quite scary at times how bad they can be.

All of this and more is why this year of footy has been spectacular to witness.
